FLOOD INSURANCE

Flood insurance provides coverage for damage caused by flooding, which is not typically covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy.

Here is a summary of what flood insurance covers and why you might need it:

  1. Coverage for property damage: Flood insurance typically covers damage to your home's structure and its contents caused by flooding, including damage to the foundation, walls, floors, and personal belongings.

  2. Coverage for cleanup and repair costs: Flood insurance can also cover the cost of cleaning up after a flood and making necessary repairs to your home and its contents. This can include costs associated with drying out the property, removing debris, and replacing damaged items.

  3. Coverage for temporary housing: If your home is uninhabitable due to flood damage, flood insurance may also cover the cost of temporary housing while your home is being repaired.

Floods can happen anywhere, even in areas that are not typically prone to flooding, and they can be incredibly costly to repair. One need not reside in a high-risk flood zone to purchase this policy. In fact, lower risk areas typically cost less. It is very important to know that floods are occurring more frequently in areas that have never flooded before. Home insurance will not cover a flood.

Policy types are available by private flood carriers as well as through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
